Overview'Marooned on Molokai' began as a daily log kept of experiences on the 'befoh-time' island of Molokai, back in 2005 as the author was preparing to retire there. It evolved into a concurrent and leisurely examination of ancient Hawaii's cultural traditions set against the backdrop of efforts made by Molokaiian residents to preserve the culture of 'old Hawaii', through continued resistance towards modern commercial efforts to develop and exploit this last refuge of Hawaii's kanaka maoli (original) island heritage and preserve the old ways. It would prove both informative and instructive to anyone not originally from the islands who views Hawaii as a sort of Polynesian Disneyland recreational resort destination, rather than an ancient and highly respected Pacific island culture that has suffered much throughout its last several hundred years as an subordinated 'property' of the United States. Table of ContentsReviewsA subjective, but fascinating narrative on Hawaiian culture today The author, who spent part of his childhood growing up in Honolulu, has given us a personal look into ordinary life on this least developed of the major Hawaiian Islands that seldom makes the transition from direct experience into actual print and serves also as a cautionary tale about conventional American misconceptions of what Hawaii is actually all about. -Robert Kapoliani, Halawa Institute of Teleological Determinism A subjective, but fascinating narrative on Hawaiian culture today The author, who spent part of his childhood growing up in Honolulu, has given us a personal look into ordinary life on this least developed of the major Hawaiian Islands that seldom makes the transition from direct experience into actual print and serves also as a cautionary tale about conventional American misconceptions of what Hawaii is actually all about. -Robert Kapoliani, Halawa Institute of Teleological Determinism Author InformationKalikiano Kalei, a resident of Sacramento (CA) and Moloka'i (HI), spent his formative years in the San Francisco Bay Area, specifically in the city of Berkeley, after service in the US Air Force during the Vietnam era. A student of East Asian studies and civilisation, his literary influences include the Beat poets and writers, Rimbaud, Badelaire, Gary Snyder, Richard Brautigan, Alan Watts, and a range of others who followed similar paths in life. Principally involved with aerospace medicine during his service years, he subsequently developed a civilian career in cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary medical technology that took him to the Southwest Asia, Europe and Asia (China) regions for a number of years and involved him in CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear) defense technology. A lifelong writer, admittedly possessed of very modest writing talents, his books include a number of poetry works and prose on a range of subjects. Primarily at home in Sacramento (CA), he shares his home with a wife, several Siberian Husky dogs, and a monumental library of literature and documentation.
