"Marriage is a formal and durable sexual union of one or more men and one or more women, which is conducted within a set of designated rights and duties. The term ""formal"" means socially approved and ""durable"" means with the intent of permanence. ""Sexual Union"" refers to sexual intimacies, including sexual intercourse; ""conducted within a set of designated rights and duties"" mean that in a marital relationship there are statuses and roles. A status is a position in society, such on policeman, teacher, student mother, or friend; in a marriage relationship the specific statuses are those of husband and wife. Role is the term used to refer to the expectation made of a person in a specific status, both in regard to the rights permitted to him and the duties expected of him."
