Overview

The book is designed for the beginning/intermediate marimba (keyboard percussion) student as a stand-alone, graded introduction to performing in all major and minor keys. It incorporates the development of two mallet and four mallet marimba technique with the understanding of fundamental music theory. Included in each lesson are two mallet and four mallet exercises as well as reading etudes, memorization etudes and duets. In addition, there are four mallet etudes, Bach chorales, and beginning jazz progressions.

Author Information

Fred Bugbee is the Director of Percussion Studies at New Mexico State University. He holds a Doctorate and Master's degree from the Eastman School of Music, where he was also awarded the coveted Eastman Performer's Certificate. Bugbee's professional orchestral background includes performances with: El Paso Opera, Las Cruces Symphony, Juarez Symphony, Brevard Music Festival Orchestra, Santa Fe Symphony, Santa Fe Opera, El Paso Pro Musica, El Paso Symphony, New Mexico Symphony, Charleston Symphony, Greenville Symphony, and the Asheville Symphony. Bugbee has been recorded on the Capstone label, and as a member of the Eastman Wind Ensemble on the Sony label. He has given solo, as well as ensemble performances at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention, the national convention of the Society for American Musicians, the International Trumpet Guild Convention and the International Horn Society Convention. In addition, Bugbee has commissioned and premiered numerous new works for solo marimba. He has had articles published in Percussive Notes and in Medical Problems of Performing Artists. Bugbee was a founding member of the Tempus Percussion Quartet, the LINKS Trans-media Ensemble, and gives frequent solo recitals. His most recent project, Las Marimbas de Las Cruces, is an eclectic mix of marimba music from around the world. In addition, he is an active clinician and adjudicator throughout the southwest.
