Reviews

This book which includes over 200 of Margaret’s illustrations is compiled by Peter Stevenson and published by H'MM Foundation in partnership with the National Library of Wales. One morning, Margaret Jones stood on her doorstep on the Buarth in Aberystwyth reading a letter from the Arts Council of Wales asking if she would be interested in illustrating a full-colour edition of The Four Branches of the Mabinogion. Through her lifelong love of mythology and folklore, she was aware that generations had grown up with these culturally iconic stories, the tales of the tribe, of Branwen and her messenger bird, and Blodeuedd the woman of flowers transformed into an owl by Gwydion the Machiavellian magician. Margaret was over sixty and had never illustrated a book before, and she knew she could shatter dreams with a single brushstroke. ‘Her illustrations, without doubt, enrich our experience of the tales and challenge our assumptions, raising questions that are not always immediately apparent in the text itself. Moreover, her powerful images help the reader to remember the tales, a crucial element within the storytelling tradition.’ Sioned Davies 'Often there would be a piece she was working on, and with her natural ability as story teller she’d explain the tale behind the image.' Seren Morgan Jones -- Publisher: H'mm Foundation
