Overview

The ancient art of marbling, first practiced in 15th-century Persia, is alive and well with contemporary crafters and designers. It is the fluid and ethereal ""cloud art"" that was once seen only inside the covers of old books. The swirling, feathery patterns and dramatic speckles of color convey an almost exotic feel, yet these complex, elegant designs are remarkably easy to achieve using simple materials and tools, even for first-time marblers. With this beautifully illustrated book, author and artist Wendy Addison presents clear and insightful instructions on how to create your own marbling patterns in a variety of mediums. In the first section, she explains how to choose and prepare your tools and materials, with specific attention paid to the requirements of different types of paints, papers, and fabrics. Then, in the next section, the book shows off gorgeous samples of possible patterns, along with easy-to-follow techniques for creating them; this section includes a treasure trove of helpful troubleshooting tips. And finally, Addison suggests a wealth of ways to use marbling in various projects and offers inspiring ideas for possible ways to make money selling your marbled products. Filled with insightful practical advice you won't find anywhere else, Marbling Techniques is an invaluable resource for beginners and experienced crafters alike. It will quickly put you on the path to confidently creating gorgeous marbling patterns of your own.

The ancient art of marbling--long confined to the endpapers of leather-bound books--is experiencing renewed interest among today's crafters. This nicely presented book covers all the basics of marbling paper and fabric, from making your own tools to working with various types of paints to setting up your workspace. The heart of the book explains the specifics of how to create seven basic marbling patterns and how to troubleshoot technical problems, plus ways to achieve seven specialty techniques, including marbling dimensional objects. The concluding section offers ideas for several projects incorporating marbling, as well as a brief explanation about going into business selling your marbled products. --Amazon Review The fifteenth-century Persians called marbling ""cloud art."" Its ethereal nickname comes as no surprise, since marbling was used primarily for decorating the flyleaves of important books. Now there are other purposes for this elegant craft, and practitioner Medeiros explores the practicalities as well as the how-to's of marbling. Everything is figured for a restricted budget; she warns about purchasing expensive whisks, for example, when bound-together broom straws will suffice. Even more impressive is her arsenal of techniques and suggestions; the step-by-step photographs and the remedies for common problems make both standard and special techniques easy to complete. --Barbara Jacobs / Booklist
