Reviews

This handsomely produced book provides a muscular reworking of past studies of disciplines and medical sociology at a time when professors are increasingly marginalized (p. 71). Universities are no longer envisioned as centers of scholarship but as institutions run by professional managers for training highly skilled workers and for producing intellectual capital. Given what she found in her survey, some serious discussions about the role, values, and functions of both the specialty and discipline would be timely. - Donald W. Light, American Journal of Sociology 119(1) Mapping the Sociology of Health and Medicine is unique and fascinating and highly recommended. - Stephanie Doris Short, Health Sociology Review http://hsr.e-contentmanagement.com/book-reviews/review/1251/mapping-the-sociology-of-health-and-medicine
