Overview

This volume presents a systematic approach to the methods of procurement and examination of bone marrow (aspiration and trephine biopsy) samples that play a crucial role in the diagnosis and management of patients with various hematological, as well as non-hematological, conditions. It systematically explains how to obtain and process bone marrow samples and outlines the methods employed to carry out this specialized clinical procedure safely and effectively. Both aspiration and trephine (core) biopsy techniques are described in detail with the relative merits and illustrations of each highlighted. The book discusses both common problems and rare complications, and offers practical advice on how they may be resolved. In addition, it offers a step-by-step guide with illustrations demonstrating how to obtain aspirations and trephine (core) biopsy specimens at the bedside or in a minor operating room. Included in this informative book are a state-of-the-art review of aspiration and trephine (core) biopsy, a practical illustrated guide to technique and procedures, a description of recent developments and indications for the future. This book will be of benefit to all who are involved in procuring and interpreting bone marrow specimens, including trainee and practicing hematologists, hematopathologists, oncologists, interventional radiologists, junior doctors and nurse practitioners. It will also serve as a reference for technicians and nurses.

Reviews

The 3rd edition of this definitive and authoritative text on the acquisition, processing and reporting of bone marrow aspirate and trephine biopsy material brings us right up to date. There is even a chapter on using your mobile phone (in conjunction with an ultrasound probe) to localise the posterior iliac crest - perhaps sadly pertinent in these days when patients too large for surface landmarks and palpation to suffice are no longer rare! [...] Chapters from the previous editions of the book have been left intact and provide a useful historical perspective, as well as clear textual and diagrammatic descriptions of aspirate and biopsy procedures and the preparation of specimens. A detailed comparison of the different types of available needle follows. There are chapters on the use of imaging, and the use of conscious sedation, to assist acquisition. Patient information and a model specimen request form are appended. Technical aspects of processing and cutting trephine biopsies are documented. Formats for structured reporting of both aspirate and trephine material are given, and there is an excellent illustrated chapter of example trephine biopsy reports in a variety of different conditions. This book will be an excellent teaching resource for every haematology department. Dr Peter CareyConsultant Haematologist, Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK

Author Information

Dr Anwarul Islam is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology/Oncology of the Department of Medicine at the State University of New York at Buffalo, USA. He trained at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital in London, England, where he conducted research on bone marrow structure in human leukemia, which earned him a PhD from London University. Because of his outstanding work on leukemia and stem cells, he was invited to Roswell Park Cancer Institute, where he continued his work with Edward Henderson, MD, the Chief of Medical Oncology. Dr Islam revolutionized the bone marrow procedure by inventing and patenting the first bone marrow biopsy needle with a core retention device. He also developed and patented a multiport bone marrow aspiration needle to overcome the sampling errors inherent in the technique of bone marrow aspiration, a harvesting needle for bone marrow transplantation, and a sternal puncture needle to overcome all of the disadvantages associated with conventional sternal puncture needles. He has published over 140 articles in reputable journals, including Lancet, British Journal of Haematology, Blood and the New England Journal of Medicine. He is also a member of many professional societies in his field, including the American Society of Hematology.
