From a childhood shaped by responsibility to the front lines of Miami's most defining battles-civil rights, censorship fights, environmental showdowns, police controversies, hurricanes, and the nonstop pressures of a world-class resort city-Roger Carlton reveals the hard-won lessons that every entrepreneur, elected official, and civic leader needs to succeed. With candor, humor, and a lifetime of navigating impossible situations, Carlton shows that great leadership is about steadiness under fire. For anyone who hopes to build a business, run for office, step into public service, or simply lead with more courage, Managing Paradise delivers a master class in resilience, strategy, fairness, and the quiet power of doing what's right, especially when the stakes are highest. Foreword by Claudia Cataldi.

Author Information

Roger Carlton is a veteran city manager, community strategist, and civic problem-solver whose career spans more than four decades of public service. Born in Malden, Massachusetts, and raised in Miami, Florida during the era of civil rights and Vietnam-era upheaval, Carlton's early experiences with responsibility, inequality, and resilience forged the leadership instincts that would later define his profession. A graduate of the University of Florida with an MBA from Georgia State University, he began his career in federal service before stepping into some of the most challenging roles in local government. Carlton served as City Manager for multiple Florida municipalities, including Miami Beach, one of the nation's most complex, politically charged, and high-stakes destinations. Known for his calm under fire, his fairness, and his unwavering commitment to transparency, Carlton earned a reputation as the person cities called when the stakes were highest.Throughout his career, he has mentored emerging public servants, advised elected officials, and helped communities balance economic growth with ethical governance. His work has been shaped by a deep belief in service, accountability, and the quiet power of doing what's right, even when no one is watching. MANAGING PARADISE is his first book.
