Management of the Mentally Disordered Offender in Prisons

Overview

Drawing on case studies and his experience as Director of Psychiatric Services at the Regional Treatment Center in Ontario, the author traces the mentally disordered offenders (MDOs) management process from initial assessment, through secure stabilization, to preparation for release and subsequent community supervision. The book considers dangerousness, issues of treatment, and forensic aspects of disorder, as well as psychiatric concerns that are particular to the prison context, such as ethical issues, predatory sexual behaviour, self-mutilation, suicide, the ""inadequate offender"", and the predictably dangerous mentally disordered offender.

Reviews

Management of the Mentally Disordered Offender in Prisons provides a unique glimpse of what is currently going on in the name of therapy in prison settings. The case examples add a great deal to the work as a whole and make the book much more readable from the point of view of clinicians who have dealt with similar problems. Dr. Russ Fleming, Psychiatrist in Chief, Penetanguishene Mental Health Centre.
