Management and Coping with Anxiety

Overview

Globally, the World Health Organisation (WHO) say that almost 300 million people have an anxiety disorder. About one in 21 people (4.7 percent) of people will have major depression at any point in time. Anxiety the most common of all mental disorders currently affects about one in 13 people (7.3 percent) National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH,2019). Anxiety disorders are generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder or agoraphobia, social anxiety disorder, and others. These are the most prevalent anxiety psychiatric disorders and are related with a high encumbrance of illness. Anxiety disorders are often under recognised and under treated in primary care. Treatment is indicated when individuals show marked distress or suffers from complications resulting from the disorder. The treatment suggestions or solutions of anxiety disorders should be treated with psychological therapy, pharmacotherapy, or a combination of both. Cognitive behavioural therapy can be regarded as the psychotherapy with the highest level of evidence (National Institute of Mental Health,2019; World Health Organisation, 2019). The first-line drugs are the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. Benzodiazepines are not recommended for routine use. Other treatment options include pregabalin, tricyclic antidepressants, buspirone, moclobemide, and others. After remission, medications should be continued for 6 to 12 months. When developing a treatment plan, efficacy, adverse effects, interactions, costs, and the preference of the individual should be considered. I recommend to stop smoking, stay active, do not drink alcohol, stop taking caffeine, get enough sleep, meditate, practice deep breathing as well as eat and drink healthily. This practice of behaviour will help you reduce and control your individual anxieties better.
