Overview

For every man regardless of hair pattern, shoe size or IPA preference Man Overboard! by Mayo Clinic Press helps you understand your health and live your best life with this humorous but authoritative manual for the aging male. Let's face it, guys: we barely know what we're doing with our health. We're not stupid, we're just disinterested. Clouded by the hallucinogenic effects of testosterone, we tell ourselves ""I'm fine, and so I will continue to be fine, which is fine."" Meanwhile, men's health magazines hypnotize us with constantly changing recommendations designed to hold our eyeballs until the next wellness fad comes along. And when we finally do drag ourselves in for a clinic visit, we find that even good doctors forget that most of us don't understand medical jargon, nor do they realize we are on a time-sensitive special-ops mission: get in, get what you need, and get out! Learning about your health doesn't have to read like a colonoscopy (informative, yes, but difficult to sit through without sedation). Staying healthy is serious business, but it doesn't have to be boring. Informative but entertaining, this must-read, head-to-toe guide provides actionable advice, so you can stop worrying about your health, do something about it, and get on with your life. With chapters like ""Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs,"" ""Andropause,"" ""Sexercise,"" and ""Move It or Lose It,"" you'll learn how to: Eat right, exercise effectively, and manage your weight Address your risks for heart disease, reduce stress, and deal with back pain Avoid the three cancers that men commonly develop and know if your T levels are right Navigate challenges in the bedroom, deal with thinning hair, and handle getting oldernot unscathed, but with a sense of control and dignity It's for men of every ethnicity, BMI, hair pattern, shoe size, IPA preference and sports predilection (including none). Think of it as the ultimate checklist for your next checkup. Grab yourself a beverage and a flimsy paper gown, and let's do this!

If you are a man over 40 or if you expect to be someday, this may be the most important book you'll ever read. If you are a woman who lives with, and loves a man over 40, don't wait until he buys a copy. Get him one right away. Even better, get one for him and one for yourself and compare notes. The book covers everything you want to know from andropause and low back pain to sleeping tips and sexercise. The good news is that is written by a medical doctor who knows his stuff. The even better news is that the book is hilarious and fun to read, with practical advice we can use right away. Dr. Bowron covers everything you'll likely deal with as you age. It's like having your own private healer right beside you when you need him. I highly recommend this powerful and unique lifeline for aging well. --Jed Diamond, PhD, author Surviving Male Menopause

I highly recommend this powerful and unique lifeline for aging well. --Jed Diamond, PhD, author Surviving Male Menopause and 12 Rules for Good Men Craig Bowron draws deep from his expertise to provide more than an encyclopedic look at aging men's bodily experiences. Appreciating that aging is relentless and inevitable, much as gravitational pull tugs chest toward belly, his witticism and keen conversational style dissect middle-aged men's silent worries about their aging. Throughout Man Overboard! Bowron urges men to embrace our bodily changes. And not discount our silent worries. Man Overboard! amounts to a vital survey of the frets and should-be concerns of aging men's health. It is a most enjoyable read. --Edward H. Thompson, College of the Holy Cross, author of Men, Masculinities, and Aging I wish someone had written this amazing book 15 years ago and had made it required reading. I could not put Man Overboard! down. This book was written for me and all the other aging men by a wise and brilliant physician who I have come to trust due to his factual and humorous approach to coaching me through my aging health journey. This book provides a roadmap for all of us who have ignored the reality of growing old and what that means for us, our families, our friends, colleagues and even our healthcare team. --Michael T. Osterholm Ph.D., Regents Professor, McKnight Presidential Endowed Chair in Public Health, University of Minnesota If you are 'aging-while-male,' or if your partner is on that journey, do yourself a big favor and read this hilarious and informative book. I can't recommend it highly enough, both as a wonderful man-ual, and as a fantastic read. With humor, great stories, and sound medical advice, Dr. Bowron walks us through our aging selves. Best of all, he does it in a way where we, and our dignity, remain intact. He is quite honestly the Mark Twain of self-care. --Kevin Kling, author of The Dogs Says How and Kevin Kling's Holiday Inn If you are a man over 40 or if you expect to be someday, this may be the most important book you'll ever read.
