Making Italians: 150 Years of National History

Overview

This catalogue accompanies the impressive exhibiton being held at the historical OGR in Italy's first capital, Turin, running for 9 months and showcasing the past, present and future of Italy in order to mark the 150th anniversary of the country's unification. A major exhibition covering the history and zeitgeist in Italy from its unification through to the present day, Making the Italians illustrates the first 150 years of the country's history along an exceptionally interesting route, rich in multimedia, creativity and interactivity. Subjects covered include both World Wars, education, the church, the Mafia and politics as well as examining the cultural identity of each Italian province. The format of the exhibition allows visitors to choose their own route through the story, reliving its high and low points, both of which have given Italians an even stronger sense of identity. AUTHOR: Walter Barberis is Professor of Methodology of Historical Research at Turin University. His publications include Le armi del Principe. La tradizione militare sabauda (Einaudi 1988) and Il bisogno di patria (Einaudi 2004). He is former president and managing direction of Edizioni di Comunità, founded by Adriano Olivetti, and currently director and general secretary of Einaudi. Giovanni De Luna is Professor of Contemporary History at Turin University. De Luna has written several successful radio and television programmes. He has directed educational projects for intermediate and secondary schools and edited Storia fotografica della società italiana, 1848-1999, in 20 volumes, Editori Riuniti. His publications include L occhio e l orecchio dello storico (1993), La passione e la ragione. Il mestiere dello storico contemporaneo (2004), and, in 2009, Le ragioni di un decennio (1969-1979).
