Making Doctors: A Century of Lessons on the Practice of Healing

Overview

Making Doctors celebrates the art of healing through the stories of a father and daughter. Both achieved excellence in their fields, and both exemplify the sacred trust inherent in the profession of medicine. based on a remarkable archive of memoirs, letters, photographs, interviews and family newsletters, the story takes us from the harsh lives of homesteaders in North Dakota to pioneering innovations in modern medicine. We share the adventures of the Brooks family from prairie fires to heart-wrenching tragedies, and throughout it all we are engaged in the growth of character as a fundamental necessity to the practice of medicine. This is an intimate chronicle of importance for times in which we take the impact of technology for granted and yet, we often forget that it is the humanity we share which heals and gives us hope. Making Doctors challenges us to remember the debt we owe to the homesteading tradition, to explore the critical questions of whether we are worthy of trust, of what kind of legacy we create in our lives through our relationships with others, and whether we do all we can to be of service.
