Sally's story includes the taking of photographs that chart her transition from a 5 year old to a 50 year old. Her way of writing is illuminating and led by the actual photographs she took when she was living through challenging times that are hinted at in the section headings. 'Exploring My Family Connections', 'Innocence' and 'Staying In The Moment' segue to 'Distracting From The Moment', 'Habits', 'Survival', 'Confusion', 'Creating Order', 'Documenting' through to 'Connecting'. Sally was a victim of child abuse and making such connections and with photography to rely on throughout, she became able to 'Understand [Herself] by Studying Others', 'Take Responsibility' and 'Arrive at Acceptance', which gave her 'Normality' in otherwise chaotic situations. Finally, Sally has done more than just survive and is finally able to 'Take Centre Stage' with the publication of her story in this book. A powerful story which moved me to tears. 'Making Connections' also encourages us to look beyond what is immediately obvious in a photograph and question what the photographer might have been thinking - why then, why there and why that? I am the author and photographer of the With Photography(R) books, an unusual series in that it is the photographs that drive the narrative in all of them. Photography has always been part of my life; since the age of 5 or 6 I have had a camera to rely on. I was always busy seeking out and capturing what was going on around me - it was somehow intuitive. Over the years I have specialised in various forms and styles of photography: documentary, candid, contemporary, conceptual, autobiographical and for self-analysis and therapy, which led to the creation of Visual Metaphors as I call them; creating images with signifiers and nuances, a bit like a private diary. Although I was offered the opportunity to work as a photographer on a newspaper when I was about 19 I thought it too precarious for a woman at that time to earn enough money to offer a family stability. Times are different now. As it was I lived and worked abroad for a while in the travel industry eventually starting a company organising events. There, I turned my hand to publicity and promotional photography. It was only when my children had grown up that, having sold the exhibition company and moved to the South Coast, I could grasp the opportunity to write about what I was photographing and also what I had photographed over the years and, moreover, why. 'With Photography(R) - not just an Autobiography' is, as the name suggests, partly autobiographical. Moreover it is an almost encyclopaedic exploration of the medium I love; it is also a good read and one that I now consider to be my life's work. I wrote and published 'just' the autobiography - 'Making Connections With Photography(R)' two years later. Since then I have been photographing and writing on a number of diverse subjects including the headquarters of the Hare Krishna movement in the UK, Bhaktivedanta Manor and the Ryvita(R) factory in Poole.
