Японцы отправились в путешествие вместе с британским экипажем и провели в Китае десять недель, общаясь с китайцами и представителями западных держав. Author Information

ENGJoshua Fogel is professor emeritus in the History Department of York University in Toronto. He earned his PhD at Columbia University in 1980 and went on to teach at Harvard University (1981-1988) and the University of California, Santa Barbara (1989-2005), before moving to York in 2005. He has held a number of visiting appointments, among them the Mellon Visiting Professor at the Institute of Advanced Study (2001-2003) in Princeton, NJ. His work has mainly focused on the cultural dimension of Sino-Japanese relations. His publications include seventy-five book-length works (single-author monographs, edited works, and translations), among them: Politics and Sinology: The Case of Naitō Konan, 1866-1934 (Harvard, 1984); The Literature of Travel in the Japanese Rediscovery of China, 1862-1945 (Stanford, 1996); Articulating the Sinosphere: Sino-Japanese Relations in Space and Time (Harvard, 2009); Japanese Historiography and the Gold Seal of 57 C.E.: Relic, Text, Object, Fake (Brill, 2013); and A Friend in Deed: Lu Xun, Uchiyama Kanzō, and the Intellectual World of Shanghai on the Eve of War (Assn. for Asian Studies, 2019). He was honored in 2024 with a Festschrift, The Sinosphere and Beyond: Essay in Honor of Joshua Fogel (De Gruyter).
