Magnum Cinema: Photographs from 50 years of movie-making

Overview

The photographers from the renowned photo agency Magnum have worked with movie-makers since the agency was established half a century ago. Robert Capa, a founding member of what has become the world's most prestigious picture agency, was a close friend of John Huston, with whom he began to combine the talents of great photographers with those of great directors and actors - a tradition that has continued to the present day. These momentous partnerships are properly celebrated for the first time ever in a book that is teeming with powerful images of such legends as Clint Eastwood, Marilyn Monroe, Ingrid Bergman, James Dean, Clark Gable and many others. The roll-call of over 50 leading photographers includes Eve Arnold, Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Raymond Depardon, Philippe Halsman, Elliott Erwitt, David 'Chim' Seymour and Dennis Stock. A must-have for photography- and film-lovers alike - from the amateur to the connoiseur - Magnum Cinema embodies the result of a unique assimilation of talent on film: both before and behind the camera.

Reviews

'These are photographs of the great, taken by the great ... history in the making on both sides of the camera.' (Guardian) 'It is precisely this vaunted knack for being there that elevates Magnum Cinema above the panting pack of visually breathless Hollywood picture books.' (Vogue) 'Most movie photo books are ephemeral by nature, this is one to savor.' (Los Angeles Times) 'A must for anyone interested in film.' (The Times)

Magnum's photographers have been working on set with movie-makers since the agency was first founded almost half a century ago and this beautifully presented book contains a selection of the thousands of powerful images created by the likes of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Eve Arnold during that period. While the stars are here in abundance - Marilyn Monroe filming The Misfits, John Wayne on the set of The Alamo, cardboard prop horse in tow ('If he'd known I'd taken that picture of him, he would have taken a shotgun to me' says photographer Dennis Stock), the book also pays homage to other less visible aspects of film-making - make up, editing, writing. Precisely because of this - a great deal of the images were considered inconsequential and unsaleable to a market hungry for star gossip - the book is a valuable visual record of film history and an excellent contribution to the history of cinema.
