Reviews

I was given a copy of the Fortune Street Bridge re-dedication ceremony program and found it very interesting and informative. I applaud your initiative and effort in bringing Fortune Taylor's story back into public awareness. She played an important role in Tampa's development as a city and is someone I look forward to learning more about. - Great-granddaughter of Hugh Campbell Macfarlane (Macfarlane built what was known as the Fortune Street Bridge. It is now the Fortune Taylor Bridge.)

Author Information

Founder, Friends of Madame Taylor, activist, and author. In 2018 Tampa, Florida newcomer Gloria Jean Royster helped sponsor and erect a historical marker in honor of African American Tampa pioneer Fortune Taylor. Fortune Street and the Fortune Taylor Bridge in Downtown Tampa are named for her. Gloria Jean draws on her creative backgrounds in journalism and community organizing to research, write content, and coordinate Stories of Fortune that celebrate and introduce Madame Fortune Taylor to the broader public. This is the first of two projects she is doing. Her book Finding Fortune: Madame and Me is scheduled to be released in 2019. She lives two blocks south of Fortune Street.
