Overview

Jeanne Antoinette Poisson, also known as Madame de Pompadour, was a member of the French court and was the official chief mistress of Louis XV from 1745 to her death. As she had great influence on him, played a role in the country's artistic life, encouraged the foundation of the porcelain factory of S vres, promoted the laying out of the place Louis XV in Paris, the present place de la Concorde, and convinced the king to build the Petit Trianon palace. A lover of truffle soup, chocolate and champagne, Madame de Pompadour also took an interest in intellectual nourishment and in 1751 encouraged the publication of the first two volumes of the Encyclop die of Diderot and d'Alembert. This book evokes her life.
