OverviewThe Macchi C.202 Folgore represents the pinnacle of Italian fighter aircraft development during World War II, as well as the most advanced aircraft produced in series by the Regia Aeronautica. Nicknamed ""Longnose"" by the British due to its pronounced, tapered engine cowling, the Folgore was the result of an ambitious design project: the integration of the powerful German Daimler-Benz DB 601 engine onto the airframe of the earlier Macchi C.200 Saetta, the work of the renowned engineer Mario Castoldi, who, in keeping with the Varese-based company's tradition, gave the aircraft the letter ""C"" in its designation. The structures and skin were entirely metallic, and the aircraft retained the wings and tail from its predecessor, while the fuselage was completely redesigned to achieve better aerodynamics. Capable of reaching a speed of about 600 kilometers per hour, the Folgore was fast, maneuverable, sturdy, and reliable-qualities that made it popular with Italian pilots despite some inherent shortcomings.
