OverviewWritten over the course of a decade by a former high school teacher, this book addresses many of the problems facing public education. Topics covered include: problem-solving in education, why (or why not) to become a teacher, the preference of public education's leaders for distractions in lieu of real solutions, the increasing reliance on technology in education, professional considerations for teachers, low teacher morale, and many other topics. The author argues that public education needs honest brokers who can help it see through the fog of good intentions and feel-good gestures. This updated second edition includes some new material, including a bonus essay entitled How to Break a Teacher.
