Nurses save lives. Nurses prevent disease. Nurses promote health and wellbeing. Luminaries of the Past: Stories of Fifty Extraordinary Nurses , written by;Mary Beth Modic and Joyce J. Fitzpatrick, both of whom are nurses, contains the stories of nurses who changed society. The nurses they have written about saved the lives of soldiers on the battlefield, fought for racial and social justice and revolutionized the way healthcare is delivered today. Modic and Fitzpatrick's book invites the reader to learn about the obstacles many overcame to become a nurse and the legacy they each left on the profession of nursing and the health of the world. With support from the Marian K. Shaughnessy Nurse Leadership Academy, Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, Case Western Reserve University; this children's book is designed for middle-school children to introduce them;to the extraordinary work of these nurses. -Ann Collins, Book Reviewer
