Lumberjack's Alphabet

Overview

The Lumberjack's Alphabet has been sung since the early 1800s and possibly even earlier! Lumberjacks would chant it as they marched into the woods at dawn, sang it while they worked, and shared it around the fire in their shanty camps at night. From sawmills to logging camps across North America, this lively tradition echoed wherever timber was cut and hauled. Now, young readers can discover this piece of history in a fun and rhythmic way!

Author Information

Mike Bravener is a celebrated performer known for bringing Traditional Miramichi and New Brunswick folk music from the 18th and 19th centuries to life. His passion for preserving history through song has earned him two Canadian Folk Music Award nominations for 'Best Traditional Singer.' Mike lives in Fredericton, NB, with his wife, and is a proud father of four and grandfather of two. Virginia Alecia, an OCAD University alumna, was born in Toronto and now calls Fredericton, New Brunswick, home. She loves to infuse her illustrations with curiosity, aiming to spark creativity, wonder, and positive growth in her audience. Inspired by classics like Dr. Seuss, Shel Silverstein, and Where's Waldo?, Virginia grew up on a steady diet of fantastical picture books. Some of her fondest childhood memories are of her parents reading to her in silly voices, creating a sense of safety, connection, and fun before bedtime.
