OverviewThis is the true story of Luli, an eight-year-old immigrant girl from Marianao, a city southwest of Havana, Cuba. Luli now finds herself learning about Thanksgiving, a new tradition that was not observed in Cuba, since Spanish-speaking countries were not colonized in the same way as the United States. Turkeys are not native to Cuba, so Luli was quite surprised to see a huge frozen turkey in the supermarket that she'd mistaken for a gigantic chicken. Grocery shopping became a weekly adventure for Luli and her brother Mayi, especially after experiencing food shortages in Marianao. Spending time with family and good neighbors, sharing meals, and showing gratitude is what Thanksgiving is all about. Luli's family agreed this was a holiday they would be embracing in America, their new home.
