Overview

English summary: Like almost no other German artist, Adrian Ludwig Richter (1803-1884) personifies the fairy tale and the idyllic, and the transfer of the romantic to the rural and small-town everyday life of the 19th century. The artist had started as a vedute illustrator and had traveled to Rome in 1823. From 1838, his collaboration with the publisher Georg Wigand made him one of the most famous illustrators in Germany. Richter developed an enormous productivity and shaped an unmistakable style. This volume presents Richter's career and work on the basis of some 150 works (paintings, drawings, and prints) from the Richter collections in Schweinfurt, Dresden, Berlin, Leipzig and Essen. It shows the artist as a dedicated creator of an ideal world. Richter confronted the reality of his time and its dark sides-wars, national trauma, unrest, fears or the consequences of industrialization-with nature and family, harmonious village life, faith, love, and hope.
