""Butch"" Roberts II was born in Akron, Ohio. He is a graduate of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, with a BA in English literature. After a career in finance, he taught high school English and coached boys basketball. Jestenia Southerland is an illustrator living in Dover, Delaware. She received an MFA in illustration from Syracuse University and a BFA in film and television studies from Boston University. Sally-Ann Roberts co-anchored with Eric Paulsen the popular Eyewitness Morning News on WWL-TV New Orleans and made the newscast one of the highest-rated morning newscasts in the country for more than twenty-five years.
