Overview

"Divorced and fifty-five, Janet Silver Ghent stood in tears at Jerusalem's Western Wall in the winter of 1998 and pressed a paper between the cracks. ""Please, God, find me a match,"" she wrote. She should have marked it ""Rush."" As 1999 dawned, she took matters into her own hands and penned a quirky personals ad--""Cute writer seeks leading man for possible lifetime drama""--luring Allen, a singing Silicon Valley engineer, to a tryst in a San Francisco toy store. They tapped out tunes with their toes on a giant mat piano. Under their marriage canopy in 2000, he promised her ""a merry chase,"" and they camped among snorting wildebeests during Tanzania's Great Migration. They climbed the peaks of Machu Picchu, and wherever they traveled, they sang. At their wedding, Janet had vowed never to take Allen ""for granite."" But when his lab tests uncovered two brutal conditions, she became the rock. For Janet and Allen, when things go awry--abroad or at home--there's always a story, a song, or a book."

Reviews

"""Janet Silver Ghent has written a memoir that is candid, vulnerable, instructive, and a 'travelogue.' She captures the essence of her subject and reels us in with her extraordinary writing. Her story is an inspiration and a guideline--a testimony--to finding a Second Act in the Book of Love."" --Susan RoAne, keynote speaker and author of How to Work a Room ""Warm, funny, and smart, Love Atop a Keyboard takes the reader on a breezy journey through decades of the writer's life. Each chapter is a delightful morsel, to be savored with a laugh and, sometimes, a sigh of recognition."" --Sue Fishkoff, journalist and author of The Rebbe's Army and Kosher Nation ""With plenty of humor and heart, Janet Silver Ghent chronicles a true-love story that readers will root for, and she gives hope to those who may fear it's too late to find their perfect match."" --Karla Kane, contributing writer and former arts and entertainment editor, Palo Alto Weekly ""With snappy journalistic style and a refreshing adherence to truth, Love Atop a Keyboard brings a solid story with a happy ending--a perfect read to understand an era when women played the roles expected by society and men just played around. With great sensitivity, Janet Silver Ghent has examined and recorded her past, reproducing the discoveries, disappointments, and final decisions that have paved her road to an inspiring, joyful life."" --Sylvia E. Halloran, memoir-writing facilitator, editor, and poet"

Author Information

Janet Silver Ghent, the daughter of a New York publishing executive, grew up in a house full of books, and was determined to write some herself. With two degrees in English--a bachelor's cum laude from Oberlin and a master's from the University of Michigan, plus study at University of Glasgow--she considered herself doubly unemployable. Nonetheless, she became an award-winning journalist, writing features for San Francisco Bay Area newspapers. Now semiretired, she is a columnist for J. The Jewish News of Northern California, where she was senior editor. Janet lives in Silicon Valley with her husband, an engineer-inventor-baritone. They sing together in three chorales and travel worldwide. At home, they enjoy time with their four children and eight grandchildren. A self-described haphazard gourmet, Janet grows her own herbs and takes pride in her pesto.
