Overview

Not only a playwright whose plays were staged at the Abbey from the mid-1930s until after his death in 1951, Louis D Alton was also an actor and the manager of a fit-up or touring company. Ciara O Farrell explores D Alton s career against the social and cultural background of touring companies. Using newspaper accounts, letters and texts, a significant social phenomenon of the 1930s and 1940s is reconstructed and a glorious episode in Irish cultural history is re-examined. The author analyzes all of D Alton s plays including Lovers meeting, They got what they wanted and This other Eden, judging not only their individual dramatic strengths and weaknesses but also their applicability to Irish mores and social values.
