Overview

Roz Stevenson is a trailblazing motion picture publicist, who made her mark promoting films at top movie studios for two decades before becoming the President/CEO of her firm, Roz Stevenson Public Relations, dedicated to marketing to the African American audience. During her career, she's worked with Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Cicely Tyson, Jamie Foxx, Halle Berry, Spike Lee, Eddie Murphy, Bill Cosby, Regina King, Will Smith, Viola Davis, Bernie Mac, Morgan Freeman and Octavia Spencer, to name a few. Her memoir, Look at God! My Hollywood Walk of Faith, discusses how in the turbulent '60s that a Poverty Program-funded acting workshop gave her an opportunity to pursue a career in Hollywood. It showcases how she traveled down wild roads before discovering her gift as a publicist. Both an inspirational and a hilarious account of how her life finally came together after years of trials and errors, Roz is an open book about what it was like to be a young, wide-eyed ""groupie"" stepping into an unforgiving Hollywood. When determination and good intentions were not enough, eventually, she bowed down and humbly asked God for direction. In turn, He mercifully began pouring out miracles into her life and she discovered purpose and her perfect partner, pioneering and Emmy Award-winning film hair stylist Robert Louis Stevenson. Roz's testimony is meant to encourage others who might be discouraged. She hopes audiences will be guided by the wisdom of someone who has done it all. She wants you to know that dreams can come true, when you look above.

""Roz Stevenson set the bar for black publicists in Hollywood. For many years and many movies, her work was the gold standard on the West Coast for black film campaigns. Before I became a filmmaker, I was a young publicist working to follow in her footsteps as I built my own company and campaigns. Roz garners the respect of her fellow publicists and journalists alike for her unwavering commitment to her clients and to press professionals of color. I urge anyone who is fascinated by the film business to read about this one-of-a-kind executive and learn how she became one of our industry's best and brightest."" Ava DuVernay, Emmy Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated filmmaker ""Roz Stevenson and I first met years ago when she was first starting out in publicity. Over the years, she rose to be a great publicist and, more importantly, an advocate for the African American filmmaker, press and audience. She is revered among the black press for her undying commitment to providing them with equal access to films, stars and filmmakers. Her passion resulted in her becoming president/CEO of her agency, which specialized in marketing films to a deserving, yet an underserved segment of society."" Cheryl Boone Isaacs, 35th President of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences (2013-2017) ""Roz takes us with her on a sweet and funny ride as she and Robert juggle to balance their demanding film careers and their personal and family needs! They credit their success over the years to their love and respect for each other and to the grace of God above! Of the thousands of people working in Hollywood today, Robert and Roz exemplify two people whose contributions have been integral to the films they've worked on. Thank you, Robert, for running around the world with me for 14 years, and thank you, Roz, for putting up with us! Kudos!"" Samuel L. Jackson and LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Actors ""Leave it to Roz Stevenson to write an inspiring book about working successfully behind-the-scenes in Hollywood. She has a special place in my heart because she treated me with love and respect when I was just beginning my Hollywood career. Then there is her husband, Robert. When I was looking for the best person to be a hair stylist on my film, The Butler, he was recommended. Even though he had retired, he agreed to serve on my project, and he was awarded for his outstanding work. The thought of these two special people makes me smile."" Lee Daniels, Academy Award-nominated filmmaker
