Living With Dementia: Practical Caregiver Guide and Lessons from Occupational Therapist Teepa Snow

Overview

What is the best way to care for someone with dementia at home? This is a very complicated question full of unknown variables before anyone can give an informed answer like; how advanced is dementia? What type of dementia is it? Is the person under s doctor's care and on medications? What kinds of behavior are being exhibited? Not knowing any of those answers: SAFETY - lock up medication and have somebody dispense it for the person, put child-proof devices on doors to prevent wandering outside at night and alarms to alert the house if the door opens day or night, get a GPS bracelet, and hope they don't take it off or GPS sneakers (and make sure those are the only shoes they wear), make sure any weapons are locked up and potential weapons (bats, fireplace tools, etc) are removed, and keep dangerous items like cleaning products inaccessible so they aren't accidentally consumed. ANXIETY- keep calm non-violent things on television, car radios, and in their rooms, minimize room decor - the more minimalist the better, and watch for triggers. Many patients love baby dolls and dogs. Others are agitated by the frenetic movement of animals. Use weighted blankets and fidget blankets to help with anxiety and read or sing to them when they're agitated. The routine is good. NUTRITION- you need some dietary consultation from a doctor. Without that, I'd say limit caffeine and any kind of stimulants, be careful of dairy if the patient has loose bowels, and keep an eye out for swallowing issues. My own opinion is it is very difficult to keep the patient at home for very long. Supervision is so critical and it's tough to go to work and arrange for somebody to stay with an adult at home. But that's what needs to be done lest the patient does something that puts himself/herself or someone else in danger.
