Overview

Nestled in the steep hills of Mexico's Sierra Madre lies a remote village. Farming opportunities are scant, and many villagers rely on traditional crafts for income. Women create whimsical embroidery and beadwork inspired by Otom legends, while men carve animal-shaped benches and cut out mythological figures from Amate (bark paper). From the collections of the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico, 60 Otom artworks are reproduced along with photographs of the town and its people.
