OverviewThis book consists of biographies of four distinguished UK judges of the 19th centurySir George Jessel, Hugh Cairns, Charles Bowen and George William Wilshere Bramwell. The author explores the fascinating lives of these four individuals. Cairns, for example, was said to be the most trusted member in Benjamin Disraeli's two cabinets. He was appointed Lord Chancellor in 1868 and again from 1874-1880. Bowen was counsel for the Tichborne Claimant, the 19th century case in which an impostor claimed to be the missing heir of Sir Roger Tichborne. The stress caused by this case apparently exerted such a strain that Bowen never fully recovered. He served as a judge at, for those days, the ridiculously young age of 45. Jessel was the first Jew to serve as a High Court Judge and was one of the most distinguished equity judges of all time. Bramwell was a master of the common law, serving as a Queens Bench judge for ten years.
