OverviewFor far too long the Bible has been studied as just one among many historical and cultural documents from ancient history. That it is a foundational text for Western civilization is clear. What is too often forgotten or ignored in academic discussions, however, is that the Bible has also inspired the lives of countless saints throughout history; men and women who sought to love God and love neighbor to the point of offering heroic sacrifices, sometimes giving up their very lives. Much of biblical scholarship over the past two centuries, however, has reduced the Bible to a dead historical document with little-to-no relevance for today, beyond intellectual curiosity. This, in part, lies at the root of the tragic separation of theology from biblical studies. That theology and biblical exegesis are at an impasse has become a commonplace in academic discourse. Liturgy and Sacrament, Mystagogy and Martyrdom is an attempt to bridge the gap between theology and exegesis. It seeks to develop a theological interpretation of Scripture relying upon the best of traditional Christian exegesis and modern biblical scholarship, so that the Bible can serve, once again, as the wellspring of Christian life. Morrow's book reveals a passion not only for the study of Scripture but also for its exegetical embodiment--liturgically, mystagogically, and even martyrologically. Indeed Scripture cannot be studied neutrally. This work further confirms Morrow's stature as one of the most stimulating and significant theologians of our times. --Matthew Levering, James N. and Mary D. Perry Jr. Chair of Theology, Mundelein Seminary Known for his scholarship on the development of modern biblical criticism, Jeffrey Morrow turns his focus here to an exegetical-theological engagement with select biblical texts. The result is a collection of insightful readings which are both thought-provoking and spiritually enriching. A welcome contribution to the ongoing project of integrating historical-critical exegesis and consciously theological hermeneutics. --William M. Wright IV, Professor of Theology, Duquesne University One of the most important and all-too-neglected tasks in biblical exegesis is to provide a robust critique of modern methods of scriptural interpretation. Once again, Morrow has stepped forward as a competent and distinguished thought-leader in this conversation. Each of the five 'constructive' essays turn the exegetical orb to another angle, with exquisite, consistent results. Every committed teacher of the Bible, and every serious student too, ought to drop what they're reading and pick up this thoroughly enriching work. --Steven C. Smith, Department Chair, Associate Professor of Biblical Exegesis, Mundelein Seminary Author InformationJeffrey L. Morrow is Professor of Theology at Seton Hall University's Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology. He is author of several books including Pretensions of Objectivity (2019), Alfred Loisy and Modern Biblical Studies (2019), and Theology, Politics, and Exegesis (2017).
