Littorio and Richelieu were commissioned during the spring of 1940. Although the imminent Fall of France prevented the envisaged struggle for the control of the Mediterranean between this nation and Italy, the climax of this campaign would have been undoubtedly a gunnery duel between the newly commissioned battleships.
