Overview

This volume brings together essays from different fields of the humanities and social sciences that offer a fresh look at the complexity of artistic and cultural contacts, transfers, and exchanges between Europe and the Middle East. The studies reach far beyond the geographical regions where Europe and the Middle East have met and interacted throughout their long histories, such as the eastern Mediterranean, the south Caucasus, and the Balkans. Their focus is on the variety of ""contact zones"" of the two worlds with specific artistic creativity, characterized by dynamic processes of movement and interchange between various cultural entities in the broadest and most complex sense of the word. The studies shed new light on diverse phenomena of the ""in-between"" or ""liminal"" spaces in art and culture, with special interest in artists and art works from ancient to modern times, from fine arts and architecture to music and video.

Dr Ivana Prijatelj Pavičić is Professor of Late Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque Art at the University of Split, Croatia. Her field of interest is Dalmatian art from the 14th to 18th centuries. She is the author of several books and has published her work in journals such as ARTE/Documento and Ikon.Dr Marina Vicelja Matijašić is Professor at the Department of Art History and Director of the Center of Iconographic Studies at the University of Rijeka, Croatia. Her research focuses on iconography and iconology, and she is the editor-in-chief of the journal Ikon.Dr Martin Germ is Professor of Late Medieval and Renaissance Art at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. His research focuses on iconography and iconology, and he is the author of several books and numerous papers published in journals such as Revue de l'Art and Umění/Art. Dr Gašper Cerkovnik is Assistant Professor and Research Associate at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. His research focuses on late medieval and early modern art and architecture in Central Europe.Dr Katra Meke is a Researcher and an Assistant at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Her research focuses on the presence and collecting of Venetian painting in Inner Austria, and she is the production editor of the journal Zbornik za umetnostno zgodovino.Dr Ines Babnik is an Assistant Researcher at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Her publications include Culture of Gardens and Art and its Responses to Changes in Society.Dr Nina Díaz Fernández is an Assistant Researcher in Conservation and Art History. Her research focuses on cultural heritage, and her publications include 28 scientific papers and the book Ljubo Karaman-Conservation of Cultural Heritage in Dalmatia.
