Overview

Do you know why it is important to only pick the grey pussy willows in springtime and not the yellow catkins? Do you even know what a catkin is? Lily knows! Lily and her grandfather take a walk through their neighbourhood, hoping to find the walnut trees that their town of Walnut Grove is named after. During the walk, Grandpa describes fascinating details about other trees they see (like cedars, willows, hemlocks, dogwoods). As they stop to look closely at different trees, Grandpa discusses how Indigenous peoples used parts of hemlock and cedar trees in the creation of items such as canoes, baskets, clothing, and masks. Lily discovers that cedar bark pulls off easily and is soft and flaky! Who knew! BUT! Will Lily and Grandpa finally find walnut trees? Or will they give up and stop for ice cream instead?
