Reviews

""Sometimes, the smallest hearts carry the greatest strength. In Lily's Love, we witness something extraordinary: a young girl who, though confused and afraid, is driven by a fierce desire to help her sister. It's often said that we're all born scientists, but lose our curiosity as we grow older. Lily defies that trend--she observes, questions, and learns. Through her eyes, we discover what it means to respond with love and courage when someone is having a seizure. Lily's bravery doesn't change the outcome--but it does something equally powerful: it makes her sister feel safe, seen, and accepted. Though her little sister's life was far too short, her impact continues--through the love she inspired and the legacy she leaves in science. This story is a beautiful reminder of the resilience of children and the enduring power of love."" Dr. Alysson Muotri (Neuroscientist, UC San Diego) ""Seizures can be frightening, especially for children. This heartfelt book gently demystifies them through the eyes of a young girl learning how to support her sibling during a seizure. It's an invaluable resource for helping children understand, empathize, and respond with confidence. I highly recommend it for all families."" Dr. Ray Tsai, MD (Pediatrician) ""As a mom living with epilepsy, I've learned that Epilepsy has taught me patience, resilience, and how to ask for help when I need it. I'm proud to be raising my children with compassion and courage, showing them every day that challenges don't define us--how we face them does."" JORDAN THRASH ""Love, love, LOVE! This book is a beautiful tool for opening tough but necessary conversations. As a mom of typical sons with a medically complex daughter, I'm so grateful Lily shared her story."" Rachael Selmesky

Author Information

Lily Kristen Howard is a debut children's author with a powerful personal connection to her subject matter. As the sibling of a child with CDKL5 Deficiency Disorder, Lily grew up navigating the joys, challenges, and emotional complexity of loving someone with severe special needs. Her first book is inspired by that experience-written from the perspective of a sibling and crafted to support other children in similar roles. Now a young adult, Lily brings a rare level of insight and authenticity to a market that often overlooks the emotional journey of siblings. Her book provides families, educators, and therapists with a thoughtful resource for guiding conversations about difference, loss, and unconditional love. This book reflects not just her story-but the stories of countless children growing up in families impacted by complex medical conditions. Natalia Paredes is an illustrator based in San Diego, California. She is currently completing her Bachelor of Arts in Painting and Printmaking at San Diego State University, with a minor in Marketing. Her work combines traditional media-such as ink, watercolor, and gouache-with a gentle, narrative-driven approach that centers emotion, connection, and character. She has now started incorporating digital media for a hybrid approach. Influenced by vintage children's books, textile textures, and quiet visual storytelling, Natalia's illustrations often explore the subtleties and whimsicality of childhood and caregiving. Her use of soft palettes, hand-rendered and curved lines, and layered light draws viewers into intimate, reflective moments that feel both personal and familiar. Each piece is composed with care, balancing warmth with a quiet sense of honesty. This is her third children's book project. She is especially drawn to stories that offer emotional nuance and space for introspection, where the illustrations are not just decorative but active in the storytelling. Her process typically begins with pencil or ink sketches, later refined digitally to preserve the tactile feel while preparing each spread for print. Outside of illustration, Natalia enjoys researching visual history, character development, and the ways image and story intersect across fields like editorial work, branding, and publishing. With a growing portfolio of narrative-based work, she continues to explore how softness and clarity can coexist in visual storytelling.
