Her work is an indispensible resource for the study of school eductaion and grammar teaching in Tudor England, and what is so refreshing is that it makes no undue claims for its subject. Far from repeating the old assertions about Tudor education as wholly new and original, she shows how much it owed to the past, particularly to the fifteenth century, as well as being shaped by the circumstances of its own age. Nicholas Orme, History of Education: Journal of the History of Education Society excellent. It will surely establish itself as the standard edition of Lily, which will be hard for anyone to improve on the ultimate in careful and scholarly work. Richard Hudson, Journal of Linguistics excellent.
