Overview

It is not possible to articulate in words the sudden flash when I understood the secret warp of Love that underlies the universe - the ultimate Love to which we are all called. The unfathomable experience simply detonated the verses, and with the verses I paint a verbal world far distant from the ecstasy I experienced, yet one that is a child of that ecstasy. I trust that the verses preserve at least some of the fragrance of the transcendental space I set foot on one day. I expect nothing from them; I know they are vulnerable and fragile, but when they forced themselves on me, I had to let them out. The moment had come - however terrifying - to sing what I had lived.

Luce López-Baralt earned her Ph.D. at Harvard University. She is Distinguished Professor and Professor Emerita of Spanish and Comparative Literatures at the University of Puerto Rico. She has been awarded the Guggenheim, Fulbright, Erasmus, National Endowment for the Humanities, and American Council for Learned Societies Fellowships; the Royal Order of Isabel la Católica (awarded by King Philip VI of Spain), the Premio Internacional Henríquez Ureña (México), the Ibn Arabi Prize (Murcia, Spain), the Premio Nacional de las Letras Teresa de Ávila (Spain). She is vicepresident of the Academia Puertorriqueña de la Lengua Española. Her 30 books and more than 300 articles on comparative Spanish and Arabic literatures and mysticism, aljamiado-moorish and Latin American literatures have been published in Spanish (Un kama-sutra español, Vaso Roto Ediciones), English, French, Italian, German, Portuguese, Croatian, Arabic, Dutch, Persian, Chinese, Urdu and Turkish. Andrew Hurley is Professor Emeritus of Translation and English and American Literature, College of Humanities, University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras. For the last forty years he has also been a translator of Latin American and Peninsular Spanish literature, with more than sixty booklength novels and story collections published by leading U.S. and U.K. publishing houses, in addition to many volumes of academic studies in literary criticism, history, and architecture. Among the dozens of authors he has translated are Jorge Luis Borges (Collected Fictions and The Book of Imaginary Beings), Ernesto Sabato, Rubén Darío (for Penguin Classics), Reinaldo Arenas (the Pentagony and others), Margo Glantz, Gustavo Saínz, Arturo Pérez-Reverte, Zoé Valdés, Ana Lydia Vega, and Edgardo Rodríguez Juliá. He has also translated uncategorizable ""creative [non]fiction"" by Antonio Martorell and others, and a number of children's books.
