Lifting the Lockdown: Embracing the Evidence to Build Holistically Safer Schools

Overview

""Lifting the Lockdown"" goes beyond identifying problems; it offers concrete, evidence-based strategies for change. It details proactive and restorative approaches, emphasizing the importance of social and emotional learning (SEL), comprehensive school mental health systems, and community engagement. The book also tackles the complexities of armed security in schools, arguing for gun-free alternatives and advocating for policy changes that support sustainable, holistic safety measures. Ultimately, ""Lifting the Lockdown"" envisions a future where schools are not only safe but also nurturing environments that prioritize the well-being and academic success of every student.

Author Information

Jordan Werme has served his community as a volunteer, elected official, and through a 20-year career in military public affairs. He earned his undergraduate degree in Sociology and is currently working toward his Master's of Science in School Counseling at Central Connecticut State University. Jordan has worked with young people in many capacities and has been an advocate for evidence-informed practices in school safety, reduced exclusionary discipline, and an end to the school-to-prison pipeline. Though he has been published as a journalist, commentator, and poet, this is Jordan's first book. He lives in Connecticut with his wife and three teenage children.
