Overview

Do you ever feel as if your home, career, partner, family and friends tie you down? What if you were to let go of just one of these? How about all of them? How could you direct yourself without your usual, predictable conditions, comforts, and familiar routines? In 2005, shattered by divorce and the loss of my father, that became my challenge. I let go of being a successful business leader to embark on a journey of reinvention by taking a six-month sabbatical. However, life had another plan for me. My nomadic adventure unexpectedly lasted fourteen years. In Life Without A Tie, you'll read how a random, unforeseen series of events helped me strengthen my inner guidance, deepen my humanity, and forge a new, authentic path. From London to Chiang Mai, New York, the Himalayas and beyond, we'll relive the journey together. I'll share the highs and lows, the tears and laughter, and the principles which guided me throughout. I've reflected on and captured the insights and wisdom gained in each step, and I've also included my six rules for happiness, which I hope may encourage you to discover your own.

Reviews

I would recommend everyone to read Life Without a Tie as it feels like you have made a deep connection with a new wise friend, whilst being taken on your own journey of self-awareness to understand how your current life works for you and inspires the changes needed to put you in your element. Life Without a Tie has a little bit of everything. It's honest, raw and real. Not just in the components of Ray's journey that is laid open before us, but also in the questions posed before us in OUR own lives. This is a great book for anyone with imagination, wanderlust and bags of curiosity. Life Without a Tie is uplifting, challenging, courageously honest, and enlightening in equal measure. I dare you to read this book and not rethink your life. An account of a journey through life which is brave, raw, brutally honest, and filled with self reflection and a desire to understand what drives happiness and a meaningful way through life. A very enjoyable read and I recommend it to anyone interested in personal growth and living a full adventurous life. In his book Life Without a Tie, Ray Martin accompanies the reader through the highs, lows, and many magical synchronicities of his fourteen-year odyssey around the world. It is a remarkable book in many ways, telling an amazing story in Ray's own candid, open, and unpretentious narrative style. Life Without a Tie is a worthy, entertaining, and inspiring read. I've honestly never read a book where I was so utterly captivated and moved to tears from the first chapter. It is an honest, vulnerable share of ones man's journey to freedom. One with hurdles, big challenges, and a whole load of big, brave decisions. It offers hope and practical advice on following your own path, and letting go of all of the things that have held you captive. Reading this book, I felt like I could breathe. It challenged everything I thought about safety, comfort, and happiness. It allowed me to truly see how the constant striving for more in the pursuit of happiness, actually keeps us trapped. I've read so many books which talk about the theory around this, but reading about Ray's journey has actually made sense of it all. It doesn't always work out as planned, but if we're open, if we let go of how we think things 'should be' and truly trust in our own wisdom and that of the Universe, then we really can live a life of joy and freedom - a life without a tie. The tools, proverbs, quotes, checklists, and astounding facts that are packed into his story are gifts to me, as they were to Ray as he found them. This book is about truly living life, not just enduring it. I will return to it again and again, throughout life, for the rest of life. I am delighted to recommend this book to everyone alive! Most self-help book authors know the power of stories to illustrate the points they are wanting to make. Few write a story that also has a self-help theme running through it. But in Life Without A Tie, Ray Martin does exactly that. He invites the reader into the intimacy of his thoughts as he navigates his life after a divorce, a death and a departure from the role of award-winning, highly successful business owner to a nomad travelling throughout the world. He guides the reader to insights into their own life along the way, and so it becomes an impactful, powerful and inspirational read. I absolutely LOVED this book. It's a personal development handbook, travel guide, and an extremely interesting and inspiring story all rolled in to one. Ray describes his physical, emotional, and spiritual journey as a global nomad with such honesty and clarity. This book is full of wisdom and gives us all an opportunity to reflect on our own lives and journeys. I highly recommend this book.
