Overview

Introduction This book tells the true story of The Black Panther Party: Life & Time of Davis & Seale (Blessed We Survived) tells how two Civil Rights advocates are blessed to survive the ordeal. Angela Davis was born on January 26, 1944 in Birmingham, Alabama. Her father, Frank Davis, was a graduate of St. Augustine's College. Her mother, Sallye Davis, a graduate of Miles College in Birmingham, was an elementary school teacher. In the 1950s and 1960s Birmingham received National and International attention as a center of the Civil Rights struggle for African-Americans. Angela grew up seeing the police brutalizing Black Americans in Birmingham, Alabama. Davis was an acting assistant professor in the philosophy department at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), beginning in 1969. At that time, she also was known as a radical feminist and activist, a member of the Communist Party USA and an associate of the Black Panther Party. Robert George Bobby Seale was born on October 22, 1936 in Dallas, Texas. Seale was one of the three children born to his mother, a homemaker, and his father, a carpenter. After moving around in Texas, his family relocated to Oakland, California. In 1962, at the age of 25, Seale began attending Merritt College; it was during his time at Merritt College that Newton and Bobby Seale organized the Black Panther Party for Self Defense in October 1966. Based on a casual conversation, Seale became Chairman and Newton became Minister of Defense. The Organization initially set forth a doctrine calling primarily for the protection of African American neighborhoods from police brutality. Police brutality were rampant against Blacks, so they wanted to start defending themselves. The original Black Panther Party had morals, pride and discipline. Eventually it was under minded, discredited and infiltrated by the FBI, which destroyed it's real purpose. Therlee Gipson Therlee Gipson .
