Life on the Fringe

Overview

In the Fringe, where the edges of civilization blur into the cosmic abyss, survival is a relentless challenge. Inside a makeshift bar in the remnants of an old asteroid mine, Douglas, a stranded outcast from the heart of civilized space, encounters Alexander Hill, a seasoned spacer whose life has been shaped by the unpredictable expanse of the Fringe. Alexander recounts the strange and dangerous wonders of the Fringe: planets with parasitic grains, mountains of sentient crystals, flowers with euphoric spores, microbes that petrify flesh, and humans who've learned to survive within alien flora. He describes colonies that use death as a survival mechanism. Douglas, in turn, shares tales from civilized space: the Empire of Man, where regicide is a tool for controlling emperors; the Corporate worlds, where citizenship equates to employment; Hive worlds where people exist solely in virtual reality while their bodies are controlled by AIs for hardware maintenance; and Old Earth, a dying planet where billions are trapped and desperate to escape. As their camaraderie deepens and the drinks flow freely, Alexander inadvertently discloses the truth behind a recent attack on an imperial warship. The atmosphere in the bar thickens with tension. Unable to stay silent, Douglas reveals a secret of his own, exposing himself as more than just a lost wanderer. Life on the Fringe is a collection of short stories about the crew of the Jacob's Pride. It explores the question, how does humanity choose what makes us most human? Total control for safety or absolute freedom with no promise of tomorrow.
