Overview

Three disparate people are brought together in Leo's, a New York diner, in the summer of 1953 and continue to meet for lunch every Tuesday for a year. They are an incongruous trio: an elderly busking musician, a middle aged lady who works at Ohrbach's department store, and a young girl, new to the city, a trainee reporter at the New York Herald Tribune. Their lives, loves and even death criss-cross against the background of the culture and politics of 1950's America until they ultimately become friends. 'There they all sat that Tuesday lunchtime, the old musician, the Southern lady and the girl of course. Joel comforted himself that it would soon be over. They would never meet again. Life was like that. Passing strangers who stopped for a moment, stepped out of their lives to exchange stories, and moved on without a backward glance. Joel relished the thought.'
