OverviewWhen I first saw Young Cove I became enamored with the beautiful green water and the heavily treed shoreline. The cove is not very big. It is 1/4 of a mile wide at the mouth and 1/2 a mile long. It is twelve feet deep at high tide and goes dry on most low tides. A few hours twice a day, it is a mud flat. Only on the hottest days when the mud is exposed does the aroma make itself known. I must have grown immune to the smell. I really don't ever smell it anymore. The benefits of low tide are two-fold. One, the water gets drained out and exchanged for clear water from Eld Inlet. Two, as the water seeps into the cove and begins to rise, it is heated by the hot mud flat and warmed to a refreshing temperature ideal for swimming.
