OverviewWhat does it take to trade a comfortable life for a crumbling stone house at the bottom of a ravine on a remote volcanic island? When retired geologist Peter Cattermole and his wife Jack answered that call, they stepped into two decades of Spanish bureaucracy, treacherous mountain tracks, eccentric neighbors, and the raw, untamed beauty of La Gomera. Life at the End of the Pista is a candid, often hilarious memoir of rural survival, quiet triumphs, and the profound rewards of slow living. Through vivid storytelling, you'll discover: How to navigate the labyrinth of foreign property purchases and local customs The gritty reality of renovating a centuries-old home without modern infrastructure Unforgettable encounters with free-spirited expats, subsistence farmers, and the island's unpredictable wildlife How a devastating wildfire tested their resolve and ultimately deepened their connection to the land Equal parts travelogue, cultural immersion, and personal reflection, this book is for anyone who has ever dreamed of trading traffic jams for starlit skies, or concrete suburbs for terraced valleys.
