Overview1883. His early life as a slave, his escape from bondage and his complete history to the present time. The autobiography of Frederick Douglass, a great orator and writer and a leading figure in the abolitionist movement. He escaped slavery in 1838. He lectured throughout the East at abolitionist meetings, recounting his life as a slave. His first autobiography, The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass: an American Slave revealed his master's identity and he took refuge in England where he was helped by sympathetic liberals to buy his freedom.
