OverviewDoggerland was the prosperous and powerful kingdom that connected Britain to Europe 8,000 years ago. But from great beginnings, it now lies drowned; lost forever, far below the cold waves of the North Sea. Its disappearance was caused by a great tsunami. And what about the people who lived in Doggerland? More importantly, what about the survivors? Part rhyme, part prose story, reminiscent of Beowulf, The Tempest and Hunting of the Snark. Everything about it reminded me of The Odyssey. The journey, the loyalties, the enemies and the ensuing battle and the love story. As well as the style of the writing and bard poems/songs. Lief and Hell start off as tormentors. Enemies, I feel would be too strong but they were not friends. When a storm hits and floods their whole land, they are stranded on a log together which takes them to a foreign land. Here they meet the other children and a new family is formed. I loved Lief and Hell in their original forms - both outcasts in different ways and searching for that companionship, even if this was in the form of tormenting each other. When they found the Vantage and took on their roles there, they developed so beautifully, both separately and together. Working to support and lead the others and support and learn to love each other. The chapters based on and around Vantage really gave me Lord of the Flies vibes - one of my favourite books! The camaraderie and friendships formed and even the somewhat feudal relationship between Etta and Lief just worked so well to add interest and depth. Add in a little mystery with the promise of magic and myth ...and a few monsters ...and I think it just screams of being a modern, refreshing epic poem that absolutely everyone should read and experience. Definitely a favourite book for my 2023 list! Loved this so much! Author InformationRobin Bennett has written over 15 books for children and young adults and half a dozen for adults.
