Overview

Aleister Crowley's, The Lost Continent, (Liber 51), purports to be a history of the lost continent of Atlantis but is more of a subtly hilarious satire on Crowley's contemporary British society. In this short work the author manages to lampoon British social structure, politics, marriage, religion, education, child-rearing, sexual relations. Crowley has also inserted small jewels of Occult Knowledge which shine brightly to those who can discern them. The best description of Liber 51 comes from the author himself: .. .at times, it is a fantastic rhapsody describing my ideals of Utopian society; some passages are a satire on the conditions of our civilization, while others convey hints of certain, profound magical secrets, or anticipations of discoveries in science.
