Levofloxacin is effective against many different types of bacteria and is thus widely used for treatment. This medicine is a member of the quinolone antibiotic family. The growth of bacteria is stymied, which is the intended effect. Infections caused by viruses are not helped by this antibiotic. When the illness is caused by a virus, it will not help (such as common cold, flu). When antibiotics are overused, they lose their effectiveness against subsequent illnesses and may even create resistance.
