OverviewA collection of letters sent by seven soldiers to the Rutland Herald in Vermont, this book describes how Vermonters withstood Pickett's charge at Gettysburg, surrounded Lee's army in eastern Virginia, and garrisoned the beleaguered defences of Washington D.C. Biographical introductions are provided for each of the seven soldiers, except one, who remains an engima. Each individual story unfolds, as one correspondent is captured, another serves as a prison camp guard, and many are wounded. The final letter of a soldier killed in battle describes General Ulysses S. Grant's review of the regiment just before the horrific conflict in the Wilderness of Virginia where this young Vermonter was to die.
